By September 2004, a new NSA technique enabled the agency to find cellphones even when they were turned off. JSOC troops called this “The Find,” and it gave them thousands of new targets, including members of a burgeoning al-Qaeda-sponsored insurgency in Iraq, according to members of the unit. At the same time, the NSA developed a new computer linkup called the Real Time Regional Gateway into which the military and intelligence officers could feed every bit of data or seized documents and get back a phone number or list of potential targets. It also allowed commanders to see, on a screen, every type of surveillance available in a given territory. The technique by which the NSA can wiretap cellphones even when they are turned off and powered down is most likely being performed with the complicity of telecommunications companies who have proven friendly to NSA snooping. Trojan horse programs disguised behind routine system updates are the likely method through which the NSA gains direct access to millions of Americans’ cellphones and other devices. “You may recall the fact that Verizon and AT&T notably did not sign the collective letter asking the government to allow affected companies to release information on government requests for data,” writes Tim Cushing. “Given this background, it’s not unimaginable that Verizon and AT&T would accommodate the NSA (and FBI) if it wished to use their update systems to push these trojans.” As we have also previously highlighted, terms of agreement for many of the apps you download to your smartphone now use your microphone to listen to you and your camera to take pictures of you without your knowledge. The notion of the federal government tracking your location via your cellphone is particularly prescient given yesterday’s report concerning the DHS-funded mesh network system that Seattle Police eventually intend to roll out across the city, but have temporarily been forced to deactivate due to a privacy outcry. Aruba Networks, the company behind the system of wi-fi hubs which can record the last 1,000 locations of cellphones belonging to anyone in the coverage area, bragged in their promotional material that the grid could track “rogue” or “unassociated” devices. In other words, even if you do not allow your phone to connect to such wi-fi networks, they can still access your device, record its current and historical location, as well as download private information from your apps and other settings. We don't have many seers these days. Nostradamus studied astrology and various "occult" sciences and used those to predict the future. He's best known for The Prophecies, a collection of French quatrains published in 1555. So are these prophecies worthy predictions of the future or merely vague observations retrofitted to match past events? Here is a list of some of the most famous: Remember when the world was going to end in 1994? What about 1998? Or 2000? The doomsayers always warn that Nostradamus said the world was going to end and he NEVER GOT ANYTHING WRONG. These days, 2012's the trendiest day for end-of-world prophecies. Specifically, it's Dec. 21, 2012. Believe it if you want. One thing is clear: Nostradamus himself wrote that his prophecies only went as far forward as the year 3797. Does that mean the world will end late in the 38th century? Only time will tell. Earthshaking fire from the center of the Earth Will cause tremors around the New City. Two great rocks will war for a long time, Then Arethusa will redden a new river. Well, two great rocks could be two towers, right? But would you say those towers were warring? If you read this verse before Sept. 11, you might assume it referred to an earthquake or volcanic eruption. Earthshaking fire, tremors, rocks warring (in other words, continental plates colliding), but who really knows. Back when Nostradamus wrote those lines, skyscrapers like the Twin Towers, jumbo jets like the ones that hit them and cities like modern-day New York were probably unthinkable and unimaginable, so if he foresaw these events, would he have even known what he was seeing? The two greatest ones of Asia and of Africa, From the Rhine and Lower Danube they will be said to have come, Cries, tears at Malta and the Ligurian side. Also ... From the depths of the West of Europe, A young child will be born of poor people, He who by his tongue will seduce a great troop; His fame will increase towards the realm of the East. These two verses may in fact describe World War II and Hitler ... or not. Was the most notable bit about Hitler his impoverished upbringing? What about the genocidal, megalomaniacal tendencies? Don't those deserve something? Much of the talk of Nostradamus' prophecy of Hitler may come from his use, in the original text, of the Latin word "Hister" to describe the Danube. Trust us, he was talking about a river, not a dictator: no self-respecting prophet would make such an egregious spelling error. Near the gates and within two cities There will be scourges the like of which was never seen, Famine within plague, people put out by steel, Crying to the great immortal God for relief. OK, this one is hard to dispute. Let's face it. It's an accurate description of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. "Scourges the like of which was never seen," people "crying to the great immortal God." With that said, this verse is accurate because it cheats a bit on the specifics. Critics charge that it's so vague that it could also be used to describe a whole host of wartime atrocities during any of many wars that took place between Nostradamus' time in the 16th century and today ... or even the future. The lost thing is discovered, hidden for many centuries. Pasteur will be celebrated almost as a God-like figure. This is when the moon completes her great cycle, But by other rumors he shall be dishonored. Like many surnames, Louis Pasteur's probably once indicated a profession. Pasteur, in French, could also mean pastor, so some argue that this bit of Nostradamian prose could just be about any old priest. Others call it a shout-out to the man who studied microbial decay, brought you spoilage-resistant milk and found a vaccine for rabies. No one doubts he deserved the props. You be the judge. The great man will be struck down in the day by a thunderbolt, An evil deed foretold by the bearer of a petition. According to the prediction, another falls at night time. Conflict at Reims, London and a pestilence in Tuscany. Thunderbolts and gunshots: not terribly dissimilar. And the great man was struck down in the day, as John F. Kennedy was. The other falling at nighttime would be Bobby Kennedy (five years later). Now, it can work if you want it to, but do you really think a Secret Service agent reading that passage in November 1963 would have cause to be concerned? Probably not. And what of Reims, London and Tuscany? The cities of Tours, Orleans, Blois, Angers, Reims and Nantes Are troubled by sudden change. Tents will be pitched by (people) of foreign tongues; Rivers, darts at Rennes, shaking of land and sea. Did he really mean NEW Orleans? Hmm...The shaking of land and sea might describe the hurricane (well, the shaking of the sea would). Could the people with foreign tongues be aid workers from other parts of the world, or other parts of the country? But what are Tours, Blois, Angers, Reims and Nantes doing there? Pre-Katrina, this prophecy was originally thought to refer to France. Maybe it still should. The penultimate of the surname of Prophet Will take Diana for his day and rest: He will wander because of a frantic head, And delivering a great people from subjection. OK, pay careful attention here: The father of Princess Diana's boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed, was named Mohamed ("the Prophet" - it wasn't his surname, but never mind that). Did Diana's death deliver "a great people from subjection"? Maybe not, but we can all agree that the British are a great people, right? The fact alone that Diana's name is in the text speaks a lot to Nostradamus followers -- specific names are, in general, a rarity in Nostradamus' works. The blood of the just will commit a fault at London, Burnt through lighting of twenty threes the six: The ancient lady will fall from her high place, Several of the same sect will be killed. Look, just because you've never heard of the Great London Fire of 1666 doesn't mean it wasn't a really big deal. It pretty much obliterated all of medieval London ("the ancient lady") within the old Roman walls. Only six deaths were recorded (hence "the six" in the second line), though commoners' deaths may not have been recorded at the time. The fire, which started in a baker's shop, burned for three days straight. If only someone had passed along a copy of Nostadamus' book, maybe Londoners might have known it was coming. These will in the future by headless idiots Be received as divine prayers" You remember the French Revolution, right? The peasants ("the enslaved populace") rising to power, the aristocracy taken down and beheaded… (the "headless idiots," now "princes and lords … held captive in prisons"). In another verse, the "great wall" falling is said to mean the storming of the Bastille. It's a bit of a stretch, right? It's possible that Nostradamus saw the coming of a peasant uprising through completely non-astrological or occult means, but through his own eyes as he saw the contrast between aristocrat and commoner in 16th-century France. Or not. Damascus knows the struggle for the moment is to sway American public opinion. With that in mind, President Assad, in his interview with CBS, and statements from other Syrian officials, have stressed at least three ways in which a US military strike would backfire. There is the unspecific warning, if not outright threat, of direct reprisals by Syria, and indirect action by its allies such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iranian-backed Shia militias in Iraq. There is the warning that American action would strengthen rebel factions linked to al-Qaeda, and could even enable them to seize power if the strike were damaging enough. And there is the threat, echoed by Moscow, that any such attack would scupper already-dim chances of a political settlement through peace talks in Geneva. In reality, much depends on what exactly the Americans intend to do. If their strike is, as Mr Kerry said, "incredibly small", the repercussions might be very limited. Iranian-backed militias in Iraq might fire off some mortars at the enormous US embassy compound in Baghdad, for example. But more serious actions, such as Hezbollah striking at Israel, are unlikely unless the US launches a very major operation indeed. Russia has asked Syria to put its chemical weapons stockpiles under international control and then have them destroyed, in an attempt to avoid US military strikes. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the offer was made during talks with his Syrian counterpart, Walid Muallem, who welcomed the initiative. The US said it was sceptical, but would have a "hard look" at the plan. The US accuses Damascus of war crimes, allegations denied by the regime. US Secretary of State John Kerry, in Europe to garner support for the military action, inadvertently started the talk of Syria giving up its chemical weapons early on Monday. When asked at a news conference whether there was anything Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could do to avoid military action, Mr Kerry replied that he could hand over his entire stockpile of chemical weapons within the next week. US officials subsequently clarified that Mr Kerry was making a "rhetorical argument" rather than a serious offer. However, Mr Lavrov later revealed in a news conference that he had urged Mr Muallem to "not only agree on placing chemical weapons storage sites under international control, but also on their subsequent destruction". He said he had also told Mr Muallem that Syria should then fully join the Chemical Weapons Convention. Mr Muallem told reporters through an interpreter that Syria welcomed the initiative and praised Russia for "attempting to prevent American aggression against our people". Mr Kerry and Mr Lavrov spoke on the phone after the Russian proposal was put forward, but US officials sounded a cautious note over the plan. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the US government would study the proposal, but had scepticism over the credibility of the Assad regime. "In an interview earlier, Assad refused to even acknowledge that he has chemical weapons. Of course, the whole world knows he does," said Mr Carney. US allies have also reacted cautiously: UK Minister David Cameron said the destruction of the weapons would be a "huge step forward", but warned that it should not be used as a "distraction tactic" French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius called on Mr Assad to make "rapid, serious and verifiable" commitments to the plan German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was an "interesting proposal" but added that she hoped real action would follow 'Pay the price' Moscow has been Mr Assad's main international ally throughout Syria's two-and-a-half-year civil war. Russia has blocked three resolutions against Syria in the UN Security Council, and has dismissed US claims that Mr Assad's forces carried out a chemical attack in Damascus on 21 August, killing 1,429 people. Mr Assad's government blames the attack on rebels fighting to overthrow him, in a conflict that the UN says has claimed some 100,000 lives. The UN sent weapons experts into Damascus to investigate the attack. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday that if the experts concluded chemicals had been used, he would consider asking the Security Council to approve a "safe zone" in Syria where the weapons could be destroyed. Meanwhile, the Syrian leader gave an interview to US network PBS in which he warned the US against intervention, saying the Middle East was "on the brink of explosion". "You're going to pay the price if you're not wise with dealing with terrorists. There are going to be repercussions," he said. "The government is not the only player in this region. You have different parties, different factions, different ideologies. You have everything in this decision now." Mr Assad did not explain whether his comment was a threat that Syrian-backed groups such as Hezbollah would launch retaliation, or a warning that strikes would bolster al-Qaeda-linked groups. He has acknowledged he faces a "heavy lift" to win congressional backing. A poll carried out by ABC and the BBC on Friday suggested more than 230 of the 433 members in the House of Representatives were either opposed or likely to oppose strikes. Just 44 representatives said they would support or were likely to support action, and a large proportion are still undecided on the issue. Many US politicians and members of the public remain concerned that military action could draw the nation into a prolonged war and spark broader hostilities in the region. In a move that took both Wall Street, and Main Street USA, by surprise, the world’s largest nation has announced the acquisition of the world’s largest retailer. The Beijing-based People’s Republic of China will acquire the Bentonville Arkansas-based Wal-Mart in straight swap of US Federal debt for the retailer’s outstanding stock. The transaction is expected to close immediately, and will result in the renaming of all 8,500 Wal-Mart stores as “Great Wall Mart”, and the rebranding of the retailer’s Sam’s Club outlets as “Mao’s Club.” “It’s long been time for China to take its rightful place on the world stage of mass-market retailing hegemony”, said Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, who will take on the additional title of CEO/Party Chief of the combined operations. “We intend follow in the spiritual footsteps of our visionary forefathers, Sam Walton and Mao Tse-tung”, said Mr. Wen, in a live broadcast from the company’s new headquarters in the Shenzhen. “Sam gave us ‘Low Prices’, and Mao introduced the concept of ‘Dījià lèsèràng qúnzhòng mǎnyì,” (低价垃圾让群众满意)which, translated literally, means ‘cheap crap to keep the masses happy.’” Speaking on behalf of the Obama administration, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke explained that “The deal had been a long time in coming.
